Corn leaves can sometimes cause a “corn rash” on your skin.  You will need to experiment with wearing what works best for you.

What to Bring:

  • Water - bring plenty of water. A gallon jug is recommended and please put your name on the jug and lunch cooler. Jugs easily get confused with others when taken out to the field. Each bus will also have a supply of extra water to refill yours if needed.
  • Food - bring a lunch-sized cooler full of what you like. Fruit, cookies, sandwiches, chips, and snacks.
  • Sunscreen, Lip balm, Ball cap, Band-Aids, Tylenol.

What to Wear:

  • Hat - Any type of cap that keeps the sun off your head is highly recommended.
  • Shirts - You will need two shirts each day.  A short sleeve, Or sleeveless shirt.  AND a light weight LONG sleeve shirt.  Some of the seed companies that we detassel for make us have all arms and legs covered for protection while working in the fields.  Plus the long sleeves keep you from getting corn rashes on your arms.
  • Rain gear - Bring a poncho or rain suite for the morning dew and for when it rains. We do work in the rain if it’s not lightning.
  • Pants or shorts - The lighter the fabric the better.  Scrubs, Draw String PJ’s.  If you choose to wear shorts they need to be light weight LONG shorts.  And you will be required to wear TALL sports socks with them.  Once again we are required to have all arms and legs covered while working in the field by some seed companies.
  • Shoes - Due to Monsanto’s new safety regulations, shoes must cover the ankle bone and must be laced up.  (High stop shoes/ankle braces are NOT required of the Oakland, Fremont, and Westpoint Area)Examples are high-top athletic shoes and work or hiking boots.  Also acceptable are: lace-up or velcro sports braces.  You will be reimbursed at end of the season with a $30 Visa card.  But you must work 50% of the hours to receive one. (we recommend you do this ASAP so you can start breaking them in)

  • Cotton gloves (one with a wrist band stays on best). We do provide one size fits all type.
